Avonhurst

From above, Avonhurst looks much like a tear drop. Dominated mainly by a large volcano, a lush and sparsely forested valley, framed entirely by hundred upon hundred of islands. Near the curving point of the 'teardrop' is located a large, exotic jungle.

  • Backrunner's Isles (Winding Lands)
Encircling the continent itself are hundreds and hundreds of islands. These islands vary in size, length, and shape. Some are large enough to support villages while others are only large enough to walk a hundred paces from one side to the other. The islands are covered in forests, small mountains, and few may even have their own cave systems and small volcanoes. Rogues find these islands particular appealing because of their maze quality. One can easily lose track of which island they are on and where they are at, making these islands perfect hiding places, lairs, and ports for pirates and privateers. The locals have no true name for the islands other than varying phrases all roughly translating to versions of ‘ winding lands.’ Many of the locals believe the islands are not truly attached to the earth, but rather float like satellites around the great continent. To all others, the isles are simply called Backrunners.

  • Cimerton Volcano
At the center of the continent the hills begin to slowly become more mountainous with less and less foliage and green life. The rocks that litter this area are the remnants of past volcanic activity. Deep gullies between giant rock slabs flow through the area. The air is thick and often filled with soot and ash. Entrances to caverns are hidden among the rock and mountains. At the center of the twisted land rises a great peak, the volcano named by the locals as Cimerton. Eruptions are rare but sudden and often very violent, sweeping out into the valleys with merciless molten stone and ash. The area all around and even the volcano itself are filled with crevices and hiding places for all manner of creature. Many of these entrances lead into caverns and an underground world.

  • Terlerston (Aderon)
The continent is dominated by a large, lush valley known as Terlerston. To many of the natives the land is called Aderon. Little forest exist in this vast valley. Large trees spot the landscape but nothing that could be described as a forest can be found. Many rivers and small streams snake through the grasses. Farmers and plantations find the soil here very rich and fertile, growing only the biggest and best plants and livestock. The land rolls in hills and slopes, many hills large enough to conceal an entire village or army from anyone in the distance. Many tribes live and flourish throughout this region, some nomadic, others stationary. Herds of beasts can be found all over, and the predators also flourish. Near the coast trees begin to grow closer together and patches that could be described as forests appear.

  • Esvers (Rikatish)
Near the curving teardrop tip of the continent the area becomes thickly forested by jungle. This jungle is commonly known as Esvers, but is called Rikatish by the natives after some of the exotic creatures seen lurking in the dark underbrush. This land is filled with hostile beauty within the plants, animals, and even the very peoples that live there. Rain falls often in the jungles, and beneath the great trees and vines the atmosphere is humid and dark as little light can enter. Ruins can be found reclaimed by dense growth, and still populated villages can be found among the trees and high in the branches. Many trees are so large that their high limbs can be used as pathways and roads high away from many dangers, but even these have dangers of their own.

  • Caun
The underground within Avonhurst is a vast maze of caves, caverns, and tunnels. Many areas are large enough to hold entire villages, and perhaps they do. Deep within the lower levels the air becomes poisonous to most surface beings, but the creatures that dwell here breathe the gases and air naturally. This underground world stretches over nearly the entire continent. While these caves and tunnels offer a way for rogues and criminals to travel from one area to another without being seen by their hunters, they expose themselves to far more hostile beasts that live within the ever stretching darkness of their hidden home. Many of the tribes call the underground Caun, meaning caves. The name has been adopted by other travellers, though some cultures know this land as the underworld of their religions, a torturous place the spirit is banished to after death.
